DrMagHearing

Introduction – DrMagHearing

The rehabilitation program focuses on the auditory perception development on the basal acoustic level with no verbal acoustic connections. It is aimed at stimulation of sound intensity differentiation modalities, directionality of hearing and selective hearing, i.e. distinguishing “figure” on the background of what we hear. The sequence of exercises is defined from the auditory detection basic practice to more complex modalities of auditory perception. However, it is not obligatory to maintain the sequence and exercises can be chosen based on individual condition during rehabilitation. The full length of exercising should not be longer than 10 or 15 minutes. During the exercise sounds which acoustically correspond with fricative and explosive consonants and vocals can be chosen. The program is designed for rehabilitation approach of speech and learning developmental disabilities, auditory disorders and rehabilitation of hearing after cochlear implant surgery. Individual functions and rehabilitation sections do not have any feedback value check which is intentional and left to the interaction between the rehabilitated person and the therapist. Work with the program is always under the supervision of the therapist or parent. The program is especially suitable for children.
Characteristics of basic modalities of use

TRAINING VERSION

Basic specifications: Change of the tree image (size, colour) made by your mouse movement changes the sound (intensity, directionality or combination of both modalities). Rehabilitated person is the active creator of the resulting sound. The mouse movement makes the tree bigger or smaller, bigger tree intensifies the sound, smaller tree makes it less intensive. Moving the mouse sideways makes only one half of the tree in colour, the sound comes from the speaker on the same side. The other half turns grey.

Goal: Training for future rehabilitation version. In the case of more serious disorder or due to young age this mode can be used also for rehabilitation with the aim to train basal attention and cooperation, visual coordination, integration of hearing, sight and upper limbs movement.

REHABILITATION VERSION Basic specifications: Based on the chosen modality of exercise and chosen type of sound sounds are randomly generated by computer. The rehabilitated person changes the image appearance based on the sound he or she hears. Each sound is always repeated once; another sound comes after 6 seconds.

Variants and exercise description:

I. INTENSITY (increase/decrease): the chosen type of sound is played in different random intensities in a sequence. At the beginning of each new exercise the intensity is medium as well as the size of the tree. The patient makes the tree bigger or smaller based on the volume of sound he or she hears (or from his perspective he or she zooms in – out).

II.DIRECTIONALITY OF HEARING: See the procedure of the previous item, the intensity does not change but the side, from which the sound is coming, changes. The patient consequently moves the mouse to that half of the tree which corresponds with the side the sound is heard from – as a result that part of tree changes colour.

III. COMBINATION of I. and II., intensity + directionality of hearing. Sounds of different intensity are played from various sides.

Rehab. Aim:  Basic level of auditory perception stimulation. In the case of directionality you work with spatial awareness at the same time, when the child becomes the central point of the space and the auditory control stimulates understanding/perception of space. Integration of hearing, sight and upper limbs movement..

IV. Intensity fluctuation: The sound changes (increased intensity, decreased intensity) in the course of its duration. The beginning of sound becomes the reference point, not the previous sound.

Rehab. Aim: auditory perception sensitizing of relatively short sound duration. This perception is significant for auditory differentiation of phones. This variation of exercise is actually indirect stimulation of phonematic hearing.
